Dr. Seuss Party

I love Dr. Seuss. I love the way he paired absurdity with deep thought, and I love the way the cadence of his writing reads like a song. I appreciate that his first book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, was rejected dozens of times before being published, and how the message of perseverance is woven into so much of his work.

Today is Dr. Seuss’ birthday, and many schools around the country are celebrating what would have been his 114th birthday with whimsical dress-up days, special guest readers, inspirational quotes, and clever treats like these from my school’s Read Across America celebration.

And there ain’t no party like a Dr. Seuss party, because a Dr. Seuss party has snacks and books.

The Cat in the Hat

“You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book.”

“I know it is wet and the sun is not sunny, but we can have lots of good fun that is funny.”

“Look at me!
Look at me!
Look at me NOW!
It is fun to have fun
But you have to know how.”

The Lorax

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

“A tree falls the way it leans. Be careful which way you lean.”

“It’s not about what it is, it’s about what it can become.”

Oh, the Places You’ll Go! and one fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish

“You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And you’re the one who’ll decide where to go.”

“You have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose.”

“Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting so get on your way!”

Green Eggs and Ham

“You do not like them. So you say. Try them! Try them! And you may!”

And here are some of the party supplies used in the images above!

Happy birthday, Theodor Seuss Geisel!
